99 designs is only beneficial to the buyer and 99 designs. They get tons of ideas for free with no protection to the designers, while talented designers work believing they will have a fair chance to earn clients submitting "samples". Experientially, looking for opportunities, I recently worked on a design. Spent hours doing it. Received affirmative feedback from the "client" that I was in final four. I expected the deadline determine the winner. But the buyer extended the design phase, so any late comer could enter. It made me realize that the site was just another group of people dismissing the fair value of creative work.

99designs is a disrespect to the design profession.
People study hard for years to have to compete for 100$.

Ask a bunch of design architect engeneers the same.
Draw me a good looking bridge. The winner gets free lunch
